Call for Abstracts is Now Open!

Deadline: September 28, 2018 at 11:59pm ET

After you select "Submit an Abstract" you will then need to create an account. This will allow you to save and return to your incomplete submission before you submit.

The presenter and principal contact will receive an auto-generated confirmation email, when the submission is submitted/finalized. If you need to make any changes after you submit/finalize, please email support@knowledgeconnex.com.

The competition is open to all general surgery residents, surgical specialty residents, and trauma fellows. Medical students are NOT eligible. To be eligible for presentation at the national level, abstracts submitted may have been previously presented but not published as full papers in any peer-reviewed journal before March 27, 2019.

Submission of Military / Civilian Resident Trauma Papers

If you are a resident or fellow in the U.S. military, the abstract must be submitted through the ACS COT Military Region, regardless of whether the work was performed in a military or civilian institution. If you are a civilian resident or fellow, the abstract must be submitted through your geographic region, regardless of whether the work was performed in a military or civilian institution. Exceptions may be made only through a mutual discussion and decision of the respective Region Chiefs.

The abstract should describe original research in any aspect of trauma care. The topics must be categorized as either basic laboratory research or clinical investigation. Two abstracts from each ACS COT Region (one abstract from each category) are submitted for consideration for presentation at the national meeting, but only one will be selected for the national competition.

Submission of Abstracts

  • The abstract should be no more than 1500 words and provide adequate information and objective data to evaluate the abstract properly.
  • The abstract should be submitted electronically by September 21, 2018. Charts and graphs are accepted with the submission and must be in .JPEG format.

Award and Presentation of Papers

Winning residents will attend the Annual Meeting of the Committee on Trauma in San Antonio, TX. The competition will pay for coach airfare to the meeting and up to a three-day hotel stay for each winning resident.

Papers will be presented during the Scientific Session on Thursday, March, 21, 2019. All regional winners are expected to attend the COT Banquet on Friday, March 22, 2019, where the winners of the national competition will be announced.

The competition is funded by the Eastern and Western States Committees on Trauma, Region 7 Committees on Trauma and the ACS.

The first-place papers from both categories will be eligible for publication (after the Annual Meeting) in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
